Under a Warrant of Constitution, granted by the Grand Lodge of England, through the Provincial Grand Master of Bengal.
Venue of the Lodge meetings shifted from Calcutta to Ice House at Howrah in 1860 up to December, 1870.

Thereafter the Lodge was moved to Calcutta at 55,, Bentick Street and finally shifted to Freemasons’ Hall, 19, Park Street, Calcutta in 1941 where it continues to meet .

1873

(Centenary Year)

First Hindu Freemason of Bengal  PROSONNO COOMAR DUTT installed in the Eastern Chair on 12th December, 1873. Since then the management of the Lodge has gradually been entrusted to Hindu Brethren.

WOMESH CHUNDER BONNERJEE (First President of Indian National Congress) installed in Eastern Chair in 1878.

NARENDRANATH DUTTA (Swami Vivekananda) initiated in 1884.

NRIPENDRA NARAYAN BHUP ( Maharaja of Coochbehar) installed in Eastern Chair in 1886.

J.Ghosal ( Brother in Law of Poet Rabindra Nath Tagore ) installed in Eastern Chair in 1888

Sir U.N. Brahamachari( Famous Physician) initiated in this Lodge.

The Lodge distinguished itself for its charity. It contributed to the funds of Royal Masonic Institution for Boys and Girls, Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution, all in London between 1880 and 1891. Bengal Masonic Association for Educating Children of indigent Freemasons at Calcutta, Lahore, Bombay,  Madras & British Burma.

After formation of the Grand Lodge of India in the year 1961. The Lodge was registered as No. 1 in the roll of daughter Lodges

1973

(Bi-Centenary Year)

Celebrated in a befitting manner by the initiative of Dr. Pratap Chandra Chunder, Past R.G.M. ( Former Education Minister Govt of India)

Bir Kumar Mookerjee ( Industrialist and Former Secretary of Indian Football Association )

Pronob Chandra Daw ( Prominent Business Man) and Many other Eminent Brethren.

Again by their initiative “ BODHANA” a home for specially abled children at Rajarhat was founded. It’s a permanent Charity Project of the Lodge.  Our Lodge made the Charity into practice from Covid period May, 2020 by organising various charity programmes to distressed person effected due to Covid and Super Cyclone “Amphan&Yaas” during 2020-2021 by distributing essential items .

Regional Grand Lodge of Eastern India awarded our Lodge “ Swami Vivekananda Memorial Trophy for outstanding charity work done during 2021-2022.

2022

Finally in the 250th year of consecration, the Lodge adopted another permanent charity project by Constructing Education Centre for under privileged children at remote village in Hasnabad, North 24 pgs.

In 1890, Sir Henry Toby Princep observed there are Several pensionars and annuitants now depending upon the charitable funds of the Lodge Anchor and Hope. Then he prophesied that “Lodge Anchor and Hope” will always be regarded as a leading Lodge here and I am certain that it will always maintain its prestige in this respect.

His high hope has not perhaps been belied.
